This week's unit discusses placing images into InDesign. Along with this comes the responsibility of knowing where the images and artwork you are placing is okay for you to use. I guarantee that you will encounter times when you must locate your own images for a document. This could be for an assignment or it could be for a client. We all know how easy it can be to download an image from the Internet, but it is important not to use images that are copyrighted. If you need to use a copyrighted image, you need to obtain permission. For example, I created some graduation announcements and the client wanted to use senior pictures. These pictures, however were copyrighted. If I had just used them without consent of the photographer, I could have gotten into BIG trouble. I had the client obtain the copyright before I would do anything with those pictures. Royalty-free artwork is a great alternative and there are several places to choose from but you often need to pay for a subscription to use them.
This discussion revolves around copyright, royalty-free artwork, and what is out there that we can and cannot use. Again it is of the utmost importance for you to consider the issues regarding copyright laws. Take some time to check out the Government's website on this topic: United States Copyright Office and select Copyright Basics. Search the Web for more information that you are interested in, regarding copyright. If you are unsure what royalty-free artwork means, look up definitions so you fully understand the terms and the scope of using photographs and artwork legally.
- What did you learn about the materials used on the web. Some artwork is blocked and you cannot download it. How does that work?
- How does this affect you as a student, and as a digital designer?
- From your research, what problems do you think has or will occur regarding copyright laws?
I use DeviantART where I can contact the artist directly. A surprizing amount of artists don't care of you use their materials. I can personal say that I don't mind. I google imaged an anime couple and found a piece of my artwork posted in collage of art someone made. I was thrilled to find my piece amongst it. Some artwork has the artist logo on it, that's how I tell if it's copyrighted. It affects me because sometimes i'll find a kick a*s piece of artwork the add to my accumulated art collection (from other artists) and can't add it. I don't really see any problem with copyright laws excpet for the people who do use others materials get into too much trouble. It's a little exsessive I believe.
ReplyDeletecopyright laws affect me as a student because sometimes it is necessary to use photos for projects. As a graphic design you work with images alot, and so if you find an image of someone elses then it becomes necessary to get permission to use the photo or you could be in ALOT of trouble. some problems that i think occur from copyright laws is that there are people out there at still use other peoples images illegally.
ReplyDeletecopyright laws are placed to prohibit the average user who just wants to get things done and over with. artwork isn't the only form of copyright. when you watch a movie there is always a warning that notifies the public that they can't copy the movie.
ReplyDeletewithout consent for a copyrighted picture can delay the time which may result in passing the due date.
problems that have occured in the past forced an underground download sight to immeadiately stop and they had to pay millions of dollars.
copy rights are there for the protection of peoples creation, without that i honestly think that many will take that advantage and steal others creation, there are millions of things that are copy righted not just the art world. millions of companys have lost millions cause of the underground/black market.
ReplyDeleteSome art work on the web is blocked because people have ownership of whatever you are trying to download. They do this because even though they have copyrights on something people could still use it if it wasn't blocked, just depends on how risky that person is. Copyrights affect me as a student but more as a Graphic Designer because pretty much everything has copyrights now a days, so in order to use a picture off the interent or anything else in a design I have to make sure it isn't copyrighted, and if it is I either don't use it or have to get permission to. The problems I think will occur or already have are that people will just start copyrighting everything and no one will own anything anymore because no one will know who really made what they are trying to copyright. It will turn into a game for some people is what I think will happen.
ReplyDeleteSome art is blocked because someone owns it.
ReplyDeleteCopy right is just saying someone owns this, and they work hard for it, so they dont want eveyrolne to have it.
This makes it hard for a designer you have to find the person, and ask. write. Becuase you dont want to in trouble with the law.
How do find everything, the people. So it tends to be toss a side. FOr artist, that terriable.
Someone already owns it.. Copyright is just saying that someone owns the picture or the thing(whatever it is) and they have control over it and you have to ask permission.. It affects me as a student and as a designer because there are things i cant use.. Its impossible to obey all laws and people will push the copyright law aside..
